Have you thought about what your life will look like after completing rehab? The idea of sober living isn’t appealing to most people who want to return to their normal lives. However, this topic is important! Returning to your old way of life too soon can lead to relapse.

We want to share with you what you can expect if you choose to reside in a sober living facility. Keep reading for some insight and clarity!

What is Sober Living?

Sober living residences are a group of (usually) same-sex people that choose to live together while still in early recovery. There are many variations of this model and several organizations that offer these services. The common denominator is that people choosing to live there are trying to stay clean and sober.

Depending on the type of sober living home you choose, you can expect different requirements. For example, Oxford House will require members of each household to attend a set number of anonymous meetings per week. Additionally, you will be expected to have a sponsor, contribute to household chores, and adhere to curfews.

The idea behind living in any sober living house is to learn how to live independently without drugs or alcohol. You also learn how to get along with a diverse group of people. This teaches you how to solve the problems that often arise from living with others. Budgeting for standard monthly expenses is another benefit of this style of living.

Many sober living houses will offer socials for their members to attend. This may be a simple outing for one household or a get-together of multiple houses in the community. A group of houses might come together and choose to explore fun, sober options in a city like San Bernardino!

These functions serve a dual purpose. The first one is that you have an opportunity to meet others with the common goal of staying sober. The other purpose is to help members to realize that having fun without substances is possible!

What Sober Living Isn’t

Sober living is not supposed to be an extension of rehab. It is not an extended care facility, nor are most homes regulated by any governing authorities.

Living in a sober living home after rehab isn’t an opportunity to consistently relapse without consequence. In fact, many homes have random drug screenings to help identify residents that are in the midst of a relapse.

A sober living house isn’t meant to act as your parents or a constant oversight of your activities. Instead, it is meant to help you learn how to be accountable for your actions. You also learn to lead a sober life on your own terms.

Finally, a sober living house isn’t an easy way out or a free ride. You have to work to be there. By work, we mean you will have to obtain a job to be able to contribute your rent. Work also means working a 12-step program with your sponsor to become a better person and functioning member of society.

Making the Most of Your Choice

Should you choose a sober living house after the completion of rehab in California, it will be an adjustment. You will have to learn how to share a bathroom, common areas, and possibly a bedroom.

You will have to learn to be honest about your feelings. If someone does something that hurts you, speak up before you develop a resentment.

Everything learned while in a sober living home will be applicable for when you choose to find your own place. You will develop lifelong friends and skills that you never knew you had. This will ultimately help you maintain long-term sobriety!
